Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at bdurkin@steadystatefuelsystems.com, if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Q: What is a pump stand and why do I need one?

A pump stand is a heavy-duty steel pedestal designed to permanently mount a fuel transfer pump at ground level, separate from the storage tank. Unlike bung-mount kits that attach directly to a tank fitting, a pump stand anchors to a concrete pad and connects to the tank via suction line. You need one when a bung-mount kit won’t work — for example, when the tank is elevated, the pump needs to be remotely located, or when suction piping must remain fully accessible for inspection and maintenance.

Q: What is the difference between a bung-mount pump kit and a pedestal pump stand?

A bung-mount kit (like the Fill-Rite FRPA125) mounts the pump directly into a 2" bung on top of the storage tank. The suction tube drops into the tank through the same fitting. This works well when the pump can sit on top of the tank and the installation is simple. A pedestal pump stand mounts the pump at ground level on a permanent concrete anchor, with suction piping running from the stand to the tank. The stand is the right solution when the tank doesn’t have an accessible top bung, when codes or site conditions require remote pump placement, or when the owner needs the suction piping fully visible and accessible without disassembling anything.

Q: Is the Pump Stand compatible with Fill-Rite pumps?

Yes. The Pump Stand uses a 2" FNPT top fitting, which is the standard inlet connection on Fill-Rite fuel transfer pumps including the FR700, FR1210, and FR4210 series. It is also compatible with GPI, Piusi, and any other brand using a standard 2" NPT pump connection. Because it is an open-frame pedestal — not a brand-specific enclosure — it works with all major transfer pump manufacturers.

Q: Can I use a pump stand with an above-ground storage tank (AST)?

Yes, and this is one of the primary use cases. Above-ground storage tanks frequently have configurations where a bung-mount kit is impractical — the bung may be on a side or bottom outlet, the tank may be too large for a top-mount pump, or local codes may require the pump to be located away from the tank for clearance reasons. The Pump Stand mounts at grade, anchors to concrete, and connects to the AST via a suction line, allowing a clean and code-compliant installation regardless of tank configuration.

Q: Why is the open-frame design important?

Open-frame means every fitting, valve, union, and suction line connection is fully exposed and accessible without removing the pump or disassembling any part of the installation. On service day, a technician can see everything at a glance and reach any connection directly. Enclosed or shrouded designs force you to remove covers or panels before you can diagnose or service anything. In petroleum equipment, accessibility is a maintenance and compliance issue, not just a convenience — particularly in facilities that require documented inspection records.

Q: What height is the Pump Stand, and can I order a custom height?

The standard Pump Stand is 36 inches tall, which positions the pump at a comfortable working height and accommodates most suction line configurations for above-ground tanks. Custom heights are available upon request. If your installation requires a specific elevation to match an existing tank outlet height or to clear a containment curb, contact us directly to discuss.

Q: How does the Pump Stand anchor to the ground?

The base of the Pump Stand is designed to anchor permanently to a concrete pad. Anchor bolt pattern and specifications are provided in the spec sheet available on this site. The stand should be installed on a properly cured concrete slab of adequate thickness for the installation class — your petroleum equipment contractor or civil engineer can confirm the slab requirement for your specific site. Do not install on asphalt or compacted gravel without consulting your AHJ.

Q: Where is the Pump Stand manufactured?

The Pump Stand is designed and fabricated in the Pacific Northwest and is proudly made in the USA. It is available through petroleum equipment distributors. If you are a distributor interested in stocking or selling the Pump Stand, use the contact form on this page.

Q: What finish does the Pump Stand have?

The Pump Stand ships with a powder coat finish applied over fully welded steel construction. Powder coat provides durable corrosion resistance appropriate for outdoor petroleum equipment installations and gives the unit a professional appearance straight out of the box. It is ready to install without any additional finishing.

Q: Who should I buy a Pump Stand through?

The Pump Stand is sold through petroleum equipment distributors. If you are a contractor, facility manager, or end user, contact your local petroleum equipment distributor and ask for the SSFS Pump Stand. If you are a distributor looking to add this product to your line, use the contact form on this site and we will respond within one business day.
